Relaunch: Orient Lamp by Jo Hammerborg

Danish lighting manufactor Lightyears have had their first relaunch of an old forgotten classic icon.

Orient Lamp by Jo Hammerborg originally was both made in copper, brass and chrome, however Lightyears have decided to only relaunch the copper version but in 2 sizes.

The lamp is iconic with its organic shape and the detail of a top piece made from rosewood between the spun metal shade and the wire.

The icon was created by Jo Hammerborg in 1963 for one of the most important Danish lighting companies of the time, Fog & Morup.

ST1112 by Sven Temper

Designer and artist Sven Temper is showing a new chair at his upcoming show “Sven Temper Raumbilder” (“Spatial Pictures”) at the Hans-Peter Jochum gallery in Berlin.

Called ST1112 the chair is a unique take on ordinary household.

Berlin-based Temper is known for minimalist works that blend cultural patterns and functionality rendered in everyday wood and mass produced materials. His unique design language has evolved with time, his early work referenced artists such as Donald Judd and Richard Artschwager, incorporating a strong sculptural quality. The ST1112 consists of painted plywood, oak, and painted steel.

For the exhibition, Temper will be showing new furniture, objects, architectural models and drawings. “The title of the exhibition refers to both the material as well as the social connotations of space, its physical and social impact and how social spaces are constructed through communication and/or action. Individual actions are closely related to spatial structures and coincidentally, spaces are compounded by, and structured through, actions.” says the gallery.

Sven Temper Raumbilder opens May 8 to July 6, 2013 at the Hans-Peter Jochum gallery in Berlin.

Inside Dimore Studio’s Apartment

Milan based interior and product design studio Dimore Studio opened their doors for one week only during Milan Furniture Fair last month. On show was one of their private apartments completely done up by the studio and with several of their furniture pieces included.

The studio create timeless spaces with gorgeous and unusual collections of furniture and art. Their colours and materials are dark, lush and timeless and they manage to make an amazing and unusual mix of furniture pieces.

They describe themselves like so, “Dimore Studio assembles eras, past and present, creating both private and public spaces which possess the power to unleash atmospheres of timeless elegance with strong impact, simple and sophisticated signs, evocative of far-off and distant times, counterpoised by contemporary elements.”

Mirrormirror by Maria Bruun

Danish designer Maria Bruun has created Mirrormirror that plays with the concept of reflection and reply.

The collection of mirrors counts various interpretations that all reflect in different ways. The smallest of the mirrors is without a conventional useful reflection surface. However, the 90-degree angle makes the reflected object and surroundings seem distorted.

The medium and large angle mirrors have a larger reflection surface that also reflects on each other and mirrors the voyeur from different angles. The 90-degree angle still provides a distorted image of the mirrored object.

The circular mirrors calls for uncritical reflection of the voyeur, or moments of self-absorbed navel-gazing, which provides an uncritical reflection of the mirrored object.

Maria explains, “‘Mirrormirror’ is a design that questions human reflection, or lack thereof. A series of objects that parasites in corners, ceilings, edges and surfaces, reflecting several sides of both the space and the voyeur.”

COS Pop Up Store in Milan by Bonsoir Paris

For the second year, COS took part in the annual furniture fair in iIlan last month.Teaming up with design studio Bonsoir Paris, COS created a pop up store concept that underlined their pure and natural look in an interior space.

The design consist of modular system based on a multisided metal “star” from which up to 14 metal or wood rods can be joined and continue on to yet another metal “star”. From this a spatial structure was built from where COS’ items could be exhibited in the space.

Materials used were natural and included white painted metal, brass, string and light wood.

Bonsoir Paris is a creative duo founded in early 2010 by Rémy Clémente and Morgan Maccari.

Ascent Lamp by Daniel Rybakken

Norwegian designer Daniel Rybakken has come to be known for his intelligent and technical yet aesthetic and sensitive lighting design. Recently he launched Ascent Lamp for Luceplan.

The metal table lamp has a dimmer placed on the actual shade and can be moved up and down along the main pedestal base. Hereby the light beam can be adjusted in it’s size and spread.

Viktor Leske Hair Salon by Karhard Architektur + Design

“Less materials to create more atmosphere” was the dogma for German studio Karhard Architektur + Design when creating this hair salon in Berlin.

One of the main features are the mirrors that curve down from the ceiling on thick steel frames.

The suspended mirrors are constructed from black steel and oxidised stainless steel and create a pair of two-sided styling stations in the large front room of the Viktor Leske salon.

Karhard Architektur + Design used a materials palette of concrete and steel for the surrounding surfaces of the room. “The only briefing from Viktor Leske was to create something extraordinary,” explains architects Thomas Karsten and Alexandra Erhard. “We tried to use less materials to create more atmosphere.”.

The floor is concrete, while wooden ledges line the walls to provide seating areas and a concrete lectern forms a reception desk.

Norse Chair by Simon Pengelly for Modus

British designer Simon Pengelly was inspired by Scandinavian chair design of the 50′s when he created the Norse Chair for furniture label Modus.

The chair is made from a steam bent wood frame with a laminated veneer seat and back.

Norse is intended as a contemporary take on a traditional Scandinavian seat and is available in a range of colours.

The form language of the Norse Chair seems to be very popular at the moment and among others share characteristics with the In Between Chair by Sami Kallio for &tradition.

Momentané Exhibition about the Bourroullec Brothers

An exhibition that celebrates Erwan and Ronan Bourroullec‘s 15 years career in design, has recently opened at the Les Arts Décoratifs museum in Paris.

The show is called Momentané and includes furniture, lighting, spatial designs, drawings, videos and photographs by the Bourroullec Brothers.

One of the main features of the show is a 12-metre high textile installation. The brothers have made a number of modular room divider products and all over the exhibition you’ll find a number of other installations in shape of partition walls sprinkled with pieces of furniture and 2D media in between.

Other objects featured are the Losanges rugs for Nanimarquina and Assemblages furniture for Galerie Kreo are displayed on podiums covered with their Pico tiles for Mutina.

The Shed at the National Theatre by Haworth Tompkins

The Shed is a temporary venue for the National Theatre on London’s South Bank.

Functioning as a third auditorium (the Cottesloe is closed for a year during the NT Future redevelopment), The Shed is designed by Haworth Tompkins Architects.

The artistic programme for The Shed, recently announced by the Director of the National Theatre, Nicholas Hytner, pushes creative boundaries, giving the National Theatre the opportunity to explore new ways of making theatre. In the same way, The Shed has been a test bed for experiment by the architectural design team.

Conceived by Haworth Tompkins and regular collaborators Charcoalblue, it was then designed and built in little more than a year, a collaborative process between the building designers, the National Theatre, and theatre-makers who will work in the space, in a way that more closely resembled a theatre show than a conventional construction project. Its temporary nature, building on Haworth Tompkins’ earlier temporary projects like the Almeida Theatre at Gainsborough Studios and King’s Cross, permits a structure that can be seen less as a building than as an event or arts installation – a vibrant intervention on London’s South Bank that will entrance, and sometimes bewilder, passers-by for a period of twelve months.
